SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) has a number of features that make it an ideal protocol for multi-device connectivity in support of Unified Communications. It’s most significant technical advances over other protocols are unified or “one number” addressing, intelligent routing based on device modalities or characteristics, and session transfers, the power to switch current media connections between devices.

An important characteristic of SIP is its low-overhead approach to connecting to a device, and then potentially reconnecting to an alternate device mid-session.

For example, during a current SIP connection one of the users would like to continue the interaction on another device—perhaps the callee is on a cell phone, just arriving at the office, and would like to switch to the desktop PBX phone.

SIP has built in functions that allow it to handle   “session mobility”, a long standing Unified Communications goal.

In this case, the user simply presses a “session transfer” key triggering a SIP “REFER” message containing the SIP address of the new endpoint. On receiving this message, the device at the other end establishes a  session to the new device, with SIP handling the details of redirecting the media stream from, in this case, the cell phone to the deskset phone.

Voice and Fax Messaging
Combined voice and fax messaging capabilities across the enterprise.

Enables enterprise associates to effectively and efficiently communicate through messaging. Allows office, remote, and mobile workers to stay connected to important customers, associates, and information, which enhances productivity and lowers costs.

Avaya
With Modular Messaging 5.0, one-X Speech 5.0 software licenses are included as a standard feature.

Provides key workgroups with seamless access to critical communication tools and business applications no matter where they are at work, at home, or on the road.

MultiSite Support
Allows customers the flexibility of using a single Modular Messaging system to serve subscribers at multiple locations.

MultiSite Support allows the Message Application Servers (MASs) in a single Voice Mail Domain (VMD) to communicate with multiple switches with different dial plans, in different locations, resulting in improved interoperability with third party PBXs and heterogeneous dial plans.

Speech to Text
Speech to Text is an optional, extra-cost service that converts Modular Messaging voicemail messages from speech to readable text and delivers them to an inbox or PDA.

Speech to Text lets users read their voicemails, anywhere, anytime, cutting voicemail management to a fraction of the normal time. This service increases personal productivity by converting downtime associated with voice mail retrieval, playback, and note taking into productive time.

The result is a superior user experience across all enterprise communications regardless of location, network, or device.
